SUGAR BOWL RESORT: The Terrace
Norden, California
A series of custom fire pits create dedicated social gathering areas, while the entire deck functions as an extension of Yarrow restaurant, offering table food and beverage service for the first time. Custom modular furniture, including tables, benches, and stump seating oriented toward the mountain, was designed for ease of use, operational flexibility, and stackability, with New Zealand sheepskins adding warmth to the soft finishes. Indoor-outdoor connectivity is emphasized through large movable exterior doors and a transparent façade, reflecting a California-inspired approach that brings the landscape inside. The Brown Bay picnic tables were relocated to the town green, activating the space fully for the first time in years and allowing the new deck to return to the celebratory use originally envisioned by Wurster, as documented in a 1930s photograph of people dancing on the deck. This project renovated the ground floor of the lodge and added a new social deck with a locker room below, updating key spaces in a way that honors Sugar Bowl’s identity today.
