SUGAR BOWL RESORT: Rathskellar
Norden, California
Outside the locker room, the original basement, which served as the Tyrolean music Rathskeller for ski instructors in the 1960s and 1970s and later as a fluorescent-lit refuge for skiers, has been reimagined as a warm, inviting community lounge. BCV uncovered the building’s original structure, sandblasted the wood, and exposed the first foundation wall of the lodge, honoring Sugar Bowl’s history while deliberately leaving the original edge of the lodge exposed and capped with a custom wooden bench top. Custom carpet patterns mimic the forms of the Sugar Bowl village logo, while all FF&E decisions were curated by BCV, including adaptive reuse of Nob Hill Café tables and chairs. The design integrates existing structure and materials to create a raw yet cozy character, blending history, comfort, and functionality. An exhibition developed with the Sugar Bowl Historical Society highlights iconic moments ranging from Charlie Chaplin films to the debut of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, reinforcing the lounge as both a social and cultural centerpiece.
