SOnoma farmhouse

Sonoma, California

This residential compound in Sonoma captures the agricultural heritage of the region by using building forms found on area farms and dairies. Incorporating one of the original barns on the property, the buildings are clustered to frame views and form a central courtyard used for large family gatherings.

Simple vernacular elements such as milk-painted wood siding, wide-plank flooring and a large country kitchen with wood-fired cooking complete the agrarian aesthetic. The many covered porches encourage outdoor living, and - together with abundant screened doors and windows - provide shade and ventilation during the hot summer months.
