Hog Island Oyster Co. is California’s premier oyster purveyor, with restaurants in Marshall, Napa and San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace. The company has grown and harvested its oysters in Tomales Bay since the 1980s, and now farms 160 acres, selling over 5 million oysters and Manila clams each year. Hog Island found an ideal fit for its latest restaurant and oyster bar at Marin Country Mart, a Bay Area destination for food and shopping.
BCV’s design of the space, located at the southeast corner of the Mart, reflects Hog Island’s ‘Bay to Bar’ philosophy by creating a welcoming, communal environment reflective of its Marin County roots. The 1,600 SF, 33-seat interior is defined by an expansive bar, shucking station and ‘fish market,’ creating a lively and energetic setting for guests. Behind the bar, patterned Heath Ceramics tile frames the kitchen, back-of-house and drinks station, while a marine-inspired mural from local artist Tom Killion stretches to the ceiling above. Elegant patterns and textures, including rattan and teak dining chairs from Grey House, 3-light chandeliers and gold Workstead sconces balance with the airy, whitewashed walls. In keeping with the vibrant open-air atmosphere of Marin Country Mart, the exterior consists of several outdoor seating areas, with space for an additional 60 diners.
