MUNI BUS SHELTERS
San Francisco, California
In the city of San Francisco, which strives to promote sustainable growth and the utilization of public transit, MUNI shelters are an important part of everyday civic life. The Public Transit system is a democratic component of the City and a great place for multicultural responses. Through the use of a 7x7 square-mile grid of San Francisco, each square mile can be examined in detail, mapped to explore points of interest, and allow for a very local response to 49 areas of the City.
Salt air and reflections of water unique to San Francisco directed the design team to explore lightweight, low profile structures. The bus shelters respond practically and artistically to the climate and character of refractive light in San Francisco. The ad shelter is an advertisement of San Francisco values – pushing sustainable elements and local responses to the City and its neighborhoods. Our design seeks to maintain an artistic quality but also to be overtly educative regarding the use of renewable energy.
