HANS BALDAUF, FAIA, LEED AP
Founding Principal
Hans Baldauf, FAIA, is a founding Principal of BCV Architecture + Interiors. Since co-founding the firm in 1997, he has worked across a wide range of project types including mixed-use developments, marketplaces, wineries, hospitality environments, specialty retail, and both multi-unit and custom residential projects. His experience spans master planning and placemaking, with a focus on creating projects that are grounded in context and responsive to both client goals and community needs.
Hans’s longstanding interest in the public realm has shaped BCV’s focus on work that enriches civic life. He brings a rare combination of design excellence, organizational finesse, and business acumen to his projects, with a consistent emphasis on the intersection of food, wine, and community. Whether planning a new main street, shaping innovative models for retail and public markets, or leading complex, multidisciplinary teams, his work reflects an ability to integrate distinct identities while introducing ideas that support the long-term viability of a project. A LEED Accredited Professional, Hans approaches sustainability as an integrated design principle, balancing environmental responsibility with durability, performance, and long-term relevance.
He has taught architecture at Yale University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Notre Dame Rome Studies Program. He spent the Fall of 2023 as a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome, and in 2024 served as the Bruce Goff Chair of Creative Architecture at the University of Oklahoma Gibbs College of Architecture. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows and serves as a Commissioner on the San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission. Hans has also been active in the Bay Area arts and architecture community, serving on boards including the Friends of the Bancroft Library, the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA, now Foodwise), and as past Chairman of the Maybeck Foundation. An active contributor to architectural scholarship, Hans is the author of “Design Legacy of John Marsh Davis: Early Career: Wood Expressionism 1961–1979” and “A Beaux-Arts Education: The Architectural Education of Arthur Brown, Jr. at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France, 1897–1903,” and served as editor of Perspecta 26: Theater, Theatricality, and Architecture (Yale Architectural Journal).
