East village chalet
Norden, California
East Village Chalet is a 5,400 SF single-family residence in Norden, CA. The home’s design celebrates the scale of the surrounding pine, fir, and mountainous terrain while also maintaining privacy from adjacent parcels. The ground level of the structure is a heavy concrete mass with punched openings, designed to withstand annual snowfall which can exceed 500 inches. The living space above is open and transparent with expansive views of the landscape framed by a dramatic expressed steel structure.
Gracefully weathering materials and expressive board-formed concrete were selected for the exterior to marry this residence with its surrounding landscape, as though this home had always been a part of the mountain. Wide flange steel columns and deep glulam beams on a rigorous major and minor interval modulate the space, providing a strong framework for the interior volumes. The wood paneling system which clads the shared spaces of the home draws from the historic gondola building at the Sugar Bowl Resort lodge, while bright metallic accents and pops of color infuse this cozy family retreat with light and vitality.
