The design for Sports Basement's Presidio location creates a new store from a complex of seven historic buildings, totaling 88,700 SF. Challenged with converting these separate warehouse buildings into a viable retail use while still preserving the character of their industrial wartime origins, BCV has worked diligently with the National Park Service and the State Historic Preservation Office to craft a solution that carefully prioritizes the significance of historic fabric, while proposing modern interventions that connect the buildings and providing accessible routes, seismic structural upgrades, daylighting, HVAC, exterior retail signage and unique exterior “campfire” gathering areas.

Along with the creation of “stores within stores” supporting cycling, snow sports, team sports, mountaineering and triathlon as well as fashion apparel and footwear, a portion of the building will be dedicated to customer education about the cultural history and significance of the structures. Committed to building community around participation in sport and sporting events, Sports Basement frequently includes meeting, event and lounge space in its interior program, as well as dedicating exterior deck and parking areas to the staging of sporting events and informal club gatherings.
