SPORTS BASEMENT ICELAND
Berkeley, California

BCV worked with Sports Basement to convert Iceland, the 60,000 SF former ice rink in Berkeley, into its newest store. Respecting the cultural and historic significance of the building, the design retains the character of the original ice skating and hockey venue by keeping elements such as the scoreboard and wood bleachers - the latter used for meeting and event seating. New mezzanine levels along both sides of the building create additional retail space and are linked by bridges spanning the arena. Murals of winter scenes provide a strong graphic element in the soaring, clear-span main space. Level changes necessitated by varied floor levels of the original use are accommodated through carefully placed ramps, facilitating the flow of circulation throughout the building.
