Peninsula house

Portola Valley, California

With dramatic views of Windy Hill to the southwest, this 5,100 SF residence is designed to respond directly to the natural features of the site. While breaking down the building's overall massing, the various components of the house form a courtyard anchored by a heritage Blue Oak, which occupies the only flat portion of this one-acre site.

The spaces of the main house simultaneously look inward to the tree and quiet, canopied courtyard, and outward to dramatic views. Tucked into the hillside and locked into the landscape by the great room's loggia and terrace wall, the house conceals its two-story scale and allows for a secluded poolside setting to be elegantly carved into the cascading terrain.
