historic house
Ross, California
Located in the hills of Marin County, this residence was built in 1906 by John White, the brother-in-law of Bernard Maybeck, with subsequent renovations to the house and gardens. The most recent garden design was conceived by the renowned landscape architect Thomas Church.
The renovation and addition addressed the lifestyle needs of a family of five, while maintaining respect for the existing character, proportions and detailing of the main house. The rear of the property was redesigned on all three levels with a light filled breezeway added to connect the main level and the guest quarters. A roof deck was enclosed and now functions as an exercise room off the master suite. A new pool house and outdoor shower satisfy the functional needs of the existing historic circular pool, and a new outdoor kitchen provides a focal point for an outdoor entertainment area.
