SCHROEDER'S

San Francisco, California

The revitalization of Schroeder’s, one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco and the oldest German restaurant on the West Coast, preserved crucial aspects of its history and character while re-imagining the restaurant for a new generation to enjoy. Though a city institution, by late 2013 much of Schroeder’s had become run down. New ownership enlisted BCV to undertake a substantial rehabilitation and reconfiguration of the layout of the 5,000 SF space while preserving historic characteristics such as the rosewood bar and Hermann Richter murals.

New flooring, lighting, furniture and a ‘stein locker’ to house the restaurant’s extensive collection integrated with existing materials to create a modern look and feel that still identifies with the classic beer hall of old. BCV re-imagined the space through the creation of a flexible floor plan, with bar area, dining room and private dining easily divided with mesh screens. Since reopening in early summer 2014 (in time for the World Cup), the restaurant has enjoyed a resurgence. The warm, contemporary wood furniture and finishes complement the locally-inspired California-German menu, while large custom lighting fixtures, the illuminated stein locker and communal seating areas create an authentic, vibrant beer hall feel to match the extensive food and drinks menu. A new generation of patrons is now able to enjoy this renowned institution.
